Dr. Sydney O. Beaumont

Dr. Sydney O. Beaumont the first black president of the Seventh day Adventist-owned West Indies College, now Northern Caribbean University (NCU), has died.

Confirmed reports reaching chatychaty.com are that Dr Beaumont passed away Monday July 9,2012 at the hospital. In an email message to friends, his son, Duane, sent out the "sad news".

The statement said, " I'm very sorry to have to report that Dad passed away, apparently within the last half hour..."

A retired Educator and Parliamentarian, the 94-year-old Dr. Beaumont spent 50 years in the field of Education. He was founder and former principal of Beaumont Comprehensive College in Mandeville, Manchester. He was a Student Teacher of West Indies College in 1941 and served as president from 1962 to 1964. A Justice of the Peace for the parish of Manchester. Dr. Beaumont was also involved in representational politics and served the people of Jamaica as a member of the Parliament from 1980 to 1989. He authored three books Man or Monkey, Manchester Centenarians 2002 and Long Life – Happy and More Healthful Living.

In 2007, Dr Beaumont headed a list of 26 educators who were honoured by the Government of Jamaica. “I am thankful for the recognition,” said Dr. Beaumont. “I didn’t work for it. I just did what I thought was best for the students and I am very happy to know that it has been appreciated. I am also very pleased that my students have done well and are making a significant contribution to the Adventist Church, our society and the global community,” he added.

Dr. Beaumont was a member of the Adventist Church at NCU. He was married to Dorothy for 61 years and the union has produced five sons Craig, Gary, Duane, Michael and Maxwell.

He leaves behind his wife, children and many relatives and friends.
