Ruggles-Alice Loraine nee Johnson was born to Zelmer and Lena Johnson at Estherville, Iowa, December 31, 1925. She moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 1940, and graduated from East Des Moines High School in 1945. Alice worked at the Iowa State House for eight years before purchasing a restaurant in Prairie City, Iowa where she met Frank B. Ruggles. They were married September 20, 1953. To that union, two daughters were born, Debra Kae Ruggles of West Des Moines, Iowa and Diane Rae Pollard of Altoona, Iowa. The family moved to West Des Moines, Iowa in 1965 and Alice retired from the Urbandale Community Schools after serving as food service director for twenty-three years. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, Ladies of the Moose, and a member of the West Des Moines Christian Church.

Alice passed away surrounded by her loving family, Monday, May 18, 2015 at the age of 89. Her parents, three brothers, Kenneth Johnson, Zelbert Johnson, and LeRoy Johnson, and two sisters, Rosalie Peterson and Ilene Johnson, precede her in death.

Alice is survived by her husband of 61 years, Frank; daughters, Debra Ruggles and Diane (William) Pollard; grandsons, Frank (Alyssa) Pollard, Justin (Emily) Pollard, and Lee (Amy) VanWyk; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., with funeral service to begin at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Interment will take place at Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City, Iowa.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Issa Trust Foundation, a non-profit organization Alice personally contributed to, helping underprivileged children receive pediatric health care in Jamaica.

My condolences. Many thanks to Ms. Ruggles for the wonderful work she did in Jamaica. She is much appreciated. We look forward to seeing her again, when the Almighty Creator calls her name and she is resurrected to life in paradise as promised.
